Psalm 37:4
Delight thyself also in the LORD;
and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart
The Lord has placed desires in our hearts and thoughts according to His purposes and pleasures. Sometimes He will give us a promise through a vision, dream, or a Word from the Lord. It’s crucial to wait on the Lord, and He will bring it to pass according to His timing.
Abraham’s wife Sarah was barren, older, and longing to be a mother. Each year that passed, she realized her dreams of cuddling her newborn were slipping away. Year after year, the pressure increased of her never having a child. Finally, she couldn’t wait any longer and took matters into her own hands. Sarah convinces Abraham to have a child with her maid, Hagar the Egyptian. I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her.
Hagar, the bondwoman, conceived a child by the will of the flesh name, Ishmael. In time the Lord appeared unto Abraham in the plains of Mamre with a promise. Sarah thy wife shall have a son, she conceived, and Isaac was born by a free woman and by the will of God. God kept His promises and gave Sarah the desire of her heart according to His will and timing.
Isaac and Ishmael were step-bothers that could not get along together. It wasn’t long before Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking. Centuries have passed, and today both became great nations, yet having differences. Due to her impatience and poor judgment, Sarah’s choice of action created long-term consequences. The flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other. Her desire to be a mother was honorable, but how she did it was unethical. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
Brethren, Sarah’s message is crucial for the people of God. With today’s modern technology and information, people are always in a rush. However, the promises of God are according to His timing and purposes. Be warned with the ambition of the flesh, and be patient with the promises of God. Doing something for God out of His will produces regret with long-term consequences.
