Genesis 1:2
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
God created man from the dust of the earth, for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. He shaped us in His image but not with His nature. Without the Holy Spirit and surrounded by darkness, we become occupied with the works of darkness.
The LORD looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men. Unaware that God was watching, we continue to live unconcerned in our pathetic situation. Living in darkness is brutal, and it makes the hearts of men callous to love. Outside of God’s love, our lives become meaningless.
During all the chaos, there is a chosen people, foreordained by God for His glory. They are marked before birth with a silent cry in their hearts, longing to be loved. Meantime the Holy Spirit is searching and listening to hear the silent cry of the heart.
The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people: but because the Lord loved you. There is no depth in the darkness where God’s love does not reach. There is nothing we can do to earn the love of our Father. God loves us simply because He chose to and for no other reason. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us.
God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. The Cross of Christ unveils the everlasting and unconditional love of God. Every heartbeat is His gentle hand knocking on the door of our hearts waiting on us to let Him in. He is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Surrounded by His love, every day is a new beginning. His mercies are new every morning.
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. We were born in sin and destined for self-destruction until the Lord found us in the miry clay. His love conquers our darkness, and now we can love Him in return. We love him, because he first loved us.
